Business has never been better in this part of China. Every corner of the city has a bustling electronics market, and the biggest one near Luohu (not the one at the border!) also has its fair share of foreigners, many eagerly trying to establish a good buying source.
And there’s a problem that has not changed. For the new hopeful from a Western country, the odds are stacked against them the day they step off the plane - with, or without a Chinese speaking helper.
Fresh with all the stories and information they’ve sought from the internet, reality now hits!
Let’s examine just one of the pitfalls in this article:
Your willing Chinese Guide/Translator:
Being unable to speak Chinese is your biggest drawback… believe me, the ones who tell you differently actually CAN speak Chinese, or have access to services they seem to have forgotten about when they give you such ludicrous advice.
And worse than NOT being able to speak Chinese is having (and paying for) a guide who doesn’t know left from right, and can’t tell a question from an answer.
Solution? - When you hire any guide/translation services, ask for the contact details of a recent client of the service and make contact with them and ask the salient questions (beware that the client is now more friend than client!)
A good guide will happily supply you with bona fide information.
And for the final surety, CALL UP the prospective Guide/translator and talk to them on the phone. Ask a few more than “plain simple” questions and judge the result. Why? - most mainland Chinese with some English proficiency have very low oral English ability. The email replies will look good, but there’s a more than a 90% chance that the oral skills will be insufficient for the job.

It seems that one of the most misunderstood facets of importing from China is the question of Taxes !
It’s certainly the most common question we get asked…
For the Record : We don’t add Taxes, VAT, GST or other charges. Your order is for the cost of the goods and shipping.
In most countries in the world you have to pay taxes on imported goods, and that’s the care and concern of you, our customer, NOT US !
That said, we will help our customers in any way we can that is legal. If you have information which will minimize or eliminate the taxes you have to pay regarding the labelling or declaration on your goods, please just advise at ordering time.
But… please keep in mind, that if your instructions are for a reduction in declared value, then that instruction will ALSO be your maximum insured value, should the goods become lost or damaged.
Consult your country’s government web site, and in the likely event of finding a mass of confusing information, don’t be backward in getting on the phone to the appropriate department and grill them. Then try and get the results in writing, whether mailed or by email. (This will work in some countries, believe it or not, others you may have to visit the particular department in person)

There are hundreds of different models of Chinese-made Mp4 players, of every shape, size and functionality imaginable. And of course, they’re all not equal… here’s a quick run-down on some things to consider before buying.
Size : Small is often beautiful, but not if you’ve got workman’s thumbs! Some recent models are hardly bigger than the size of the screen making deft use of the controls difficult for some. But there’s perhaps a more serious drawback, these models have everything squeezed into an incredibly small space and for some, battery life within one charge may be quite limited.
Screen : A 1.5 inch screen is more than enough to manage the audio/FM radio etc., controls, but quite restrictive for videos and a picture store. If you buying for audio only, 1.5 inch is plenty, if you intend watching video, in our opinion, a 1.8 inch screen is the minimum needed. Use the included facility software to turn the movie sideways and watch with the player turned 90 degrees, to bring it to its fullest potential.
Battery : Most players will not go a great operating distance. Short trips which are not too far from a power supply are fine. But, if you travel a lot you’ll probably need more. Players with removable batteries (here is a great removable battery mp4 player) are just the ticket. Usually they are the small nokia-style mobile battery, the player will operate for an extended time: and it’s easy to pop in another ready and charged-up one if needed.
Extra Features : There’s lots of handy extra features available, extremely useful for some, not so useful for others -
Built-in speaker - very handy if you are using the “record” feature to play back notes for meetings, thoughts you’ve recorded when travelling etc.

One of the biggest questions related to buying mainland Chinese mp4 players is : “How long will they work” … This is a constant theme across many discussion groups, in the mind of the ebay buyer/web site buyer, and right down to the tourist in Shang Hai or Beijing buying from a market stall or similar.
The answer is simple.
Your player may be doomed from the start
Nothing, and I mean NOTHING ! is thrown away in China, meaning that there are two BASE types of players offered to the market :
Those with quality, tested components AND those built with one or more reject components.
Another common trick is to use (probably also reject) components which have been “extended”. A 128meg chip “appears” to be 1 GB, and sometime after you receive it, for many, it then becomes a nightmare of reformats, reinstallations of firmware, finally to discover that the original 1 GB never was.
Buy from a small trader near a border (good example is the LUOHU shopping center at the LUOHU border crossing between Shenzhen and Hong Kong), and there’s a very high chance that they’ll be selling you an item that will NEVER work, based on the premise that you’re travelling and won’t be within arguing distance anytime soon. BEWARE the demonstration, the mp3 mp4 player will be demo’d in a simplistic way or even unseeingly swapped afterwards for the “dud”
How do you know which is Quality componentry and which is not?
Of course, you don’t until your player fails (right after you left positive feedback on ebay ! )
So don’t buy from small traders unless you’re willing to take the risk of having to trash the player
If you buy from a reliable source (whether ebay or a website) who supply well-presented information, backed up by online file resources, help sections, online contact facilities, then this is one of your best indications that you’re buying a good player
